Day One Recap
The 2013 Hilton HHonors Skate America competition got under way Friday night at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, and with that, Meryl Davis and Charlie White took the first step toward a record fourth consecutive Skate America ice dance title with their sparkling short dance set to Lerner and Lowe’s My Fair Lady. The reigning World titlists racked up 75.70 points and lead second-place finishers Anna Cappellini and Luca Lanotte of Italy, who tallied 69.88 points. U.S. bronze medalists Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani sit third with 61.26 points, with 2012 U.S. bronze medalists Madison Hubbell and Zach Donohue next at 60.71 points. The free dance is set for 9 p.m. Saturday night.
Jason Brown, making his first Grand Prix Series appearance, finished second with his personal-best short program to “The Question of U” by Prince. Brown, the 2013 World Junior silver medalist, trails leader Tatsuki Machida of Japan, who chalked up 91.88 points with his “East of Eden” program.
