How Often Should You Sharpen Figure Skates?

There is no single sharpening interval
Sharpen figure skates when edge performance changes, visible damage appears, or your coach or qualified figure-skate technician identifies a need. Ice time, blade steel, sharpening quality, skating level, ice conditions, and walking surfaces all affect the interval. New blades also generally need a professional first sharpening. Instead of following one calendar number, record ice hours and how the blades feel, then keep the radius of hollow consistent unless your coach and technician recommend a change.
This is less tidy than "every 20 hours," but more useful. A beginner skating once a week on clean indoor ice and a competitive skater training daily are not running the same maintenance schedule.
What sharpening changes
The bottom of a figure-skate blade is not normally flat from side to side. Sharpening creates a concave channel called the hollow, leaving an inside edge and an outside edge.
The curve used to grind that channel is described by its radius of hollow, often shortened to ROH. U.S. Figure Skating's magazine guide to radius of hollow explains the central relationship: a smaller radius produces a deeper hollow and greater bite angle, while a larger radius produces a shallower hollow and less bite.
That does not make deeper automatically better. Hollow choice affects the way the blade engages and releases from the ice. The same setting can feel different with another blade width, ice surface, skater, or skill. A technician needs the blade model and the skater's feedback, not just a number borrowed from someone else's receipt.
The rocker, the lengthwise curve of the blade, is different from the hollow. Sharpening should preserve the intended blade profile and toe-pick relationship. Repeated poor work can alter them. This is why figure blades belong with a technician who understands figure-skate geometry rather than any machine that happens to make sparks.
Use performance signs, then rule out other causes
A blade may need attention when a skater notices:
- unexpected slipping on familiar edges;
- less secure stops or pushes despite normal technique;
- one blade behaving differently from the other;
- a sudden change after walking off ice without guards;
- visible nicks, rust at the edge, or damaged metal;
- a coach observing that established edge work no longer holds as expected.
These signs are not a self-diagnosis. Technique, fatigue, changed ice, loose mounting, boot breakdown, or an injury can produce a similar feeling. Stop skating if equipment is loose or visibly damaged. Ask a qualified technician to inspect the skates and a coach to assess the skating. Pain, swelling, or a health concern belongs with an appropriate healthcare professional.
Avoid testing sharpness by running a finger along the edge. Skate blades can cut skin. Visual inspection, a technician's edge checker, and controlled on-ice feedback are safer ways to assess the result.
Track hours because calendars hide the useful variable
A calendar reminder can prevent neglect, but it cannot tell how much skating happened. Keep a small maintenance log with:
- date sharpened;
- technician or shop;
- blade model;
- stated radius of hollow;
- estimated ice hours since sharpening;
- ice conditions or unusual outdoor use;
- edge damage or rust noted;
- how the first and last sessions felt.
After several cycles, the log gives a personal range. If performance usually changes after a similar amount of ice time, book slightly before that point. U.S. Figure Skating's sharpening article notes that waiting until blades are very dull can make a fresh sharpening feel dramatically different. Regular maintenance reduces that swing.
Do not turn the log into a rigid promise. A collision with a hard surface can damage an edge in one step. Conversely, a quiet month on the calendar may contain very little ice time.
Record the radius of hollow every time
Ask the technician to write the ROH on the receipt, skate tag, or maintenance log. If the current sharpening works, request the same setting next time rather than asking for "the usual" at a different shop.
Useful information to give the technician includes:
- whether the blades are new;
- the blade make and model;
- the current ROH, if known;
- skating discipline and level;
- coach guidance;
- whether the previous sharpening felt too grabby, too slippery, uneven, or slow to feel normal;
- any impact, rust, or visible damage;
- whether the problem affects one blade or both.
Describe the sensation and the skill where it appears. "The right outside edge slipped during familiar forward edges on two sessions" gives more to work with than "make them sharper."
Do not change hollow as a substitute for instruction. If a new edge or stop is inconsistent, ask the coach whether technique, sharpening, or both need attention.
Inspect the result before leaving the shop
With the technician, confirm:
- both blades received the requested hollow;
- edges are level and consistent;
- no new burr, nick, or visible damage remains;
- the rocker and toe-pick area were not unintentionally altered;
- mounting screws and blade position show no problem;
- the technician has explained any blade-life concern.
If the sharpening feels markedly different on ice, reduce speed and return to familiar basics while staying within the session's rules. Stop if you cannot control normal edges or stops. Tell the technician exactly what changed rather than trying to dull the blade on a wall, step plate, or abrasive surface.
The U.S. Figure Skating source describes ROH as adjustable, but adjustment is work for a skilled figure-blade technician. Home grinding, casual honing, and improvised abrasion can make edges uneven or change the blade profile.
New skates are not necessarily ice-ready
A factory-finished blade may still require its first skating hollow. Confirm with the seller and blade manufacturer, then arrange sharpening before the first lesson if required.

Do not assume a display pair, used pair, or newly mounted blade has a usable edge because it looks polished. A qualified technician should inspect used blades for remaining life, rust, side honing, mounting, and prior profile changes before sharpening.
Protect the edge between sessions
Maintenance intervals become more predictable when the blades avoid hard surfaces and trapped moisture.
Use hard guards for short walks on approved rubber flooring. Remove them before stepping onto the ice. Never walk on concrete, metal thresholds, tile, or other hard debris-strewn surfaces without appropriate guards.
After skating:
- Put on hard guards before leaving the approved rink surface.
- Sit safely and remove the skates.
- Remove the guards.
- Wipe the blade, mounting area, and sole dry with an absorbent cloth.
- Use clean, dry soakers for transport.
- At home, remove the soakers and let the skates air naturally away from direct heat.
Skate Canada teaching material says sharpening should be performed by a trained professional and warns that storing skates with guards can contribute to blade rust. Hard guards protect against the floor. They are not storage cases.
Check guards for embedded grit before use. A guard can carry the very debris it is meant to protect against. Replace cracked guards and wet or worn soakers.
Plan sharpening around lessons and events
Do not schedule an unfamiliar sharpening change immediately before a test, competition, show, or important practice. Leave time for a controlled session and for the technician to correct a problem if needed.
If you travel, ask your usual technician for the recorded ROH and blade notes. Photograph the information. Identify a figure-skate technician at the destination before an emergency, but avoid unnecessary last-minute work merely because another shop is available.

A simple decision rule
Book an inspection or sharpening when any one of these is true:
- established edge performance has changed across more than a momentary patch of ice;
- the personal ice-hour log is approaching the usual interval;
- the blade struck an unprotected hard surface;
- you see rust, a nick, or uneven damage near the edge;
- a coach or technician identifies a problem;
- the blades are new, used, or newly mounted and have not been professionally prepared.
Do not skate on a loose blade, cracked boot or sole, separated component, or visibly serious blade damage. Stop and take the equipment to a qualified figure-skate technician.
The best sharpening schedule is personal but not mysterious. Keep the same documented hollow while it works, track actual skating time, protect the steel, and report changes precisely. Your technician can maintain an edge much more consistently when "it felt odd" arrives with a date, an ice-hour estimate, and the name of the edge that went missing.
